Conrado Walter Massaguer was born on March 4, 1889 in Cárdenas, Cuba. Coming from a wealthy family, Massaguer showed a remarkable talent for drawing from a young age. His artistic training began in Havana, but it was during his stay in New York where he perfected his style and was exposed to the influences of Art Deco and modernism. Upon his return to Cuba, Massaguer established himself as one of the country's most prominent illustrators and caricaturists. In 1916, he co-founded the magazine Social with his brother Oscar Massaguer. Social quickly became one of the most influential publications of the time, known for its high-quality content and sophisticated covers designed by Massaguer. Massaguer was a pioneer in introducing the Art Deco style to Cuban illustration. His cartoons were known for their elegance, humor and social criticism. He worked in a variety of publications, including the newspaper “El Mundo” and the magazine “Carteles”. In addition to Social, he also directed the magazine “Pulgarcito”, a satirical publication. Massaguer's work not only embellished the publications he worked for, but also reflected and shaped the cultural identity of early 20th century Cuba. Its covers and cartoons addressed topics such as modernity, politics, and social dynamics, providing a cosmopolitan and critical vision. Massaguer spent several periods in the United States, where his work was also well received. He collaborated with prestigious magazines such as “Vanity Fair” and “The New Yorker”. His stay in the United States allowed him to be in contact with the artistic and literary avant-garde, which influenced his style and vision.
