Agustín Bejarano was born on December 12, 1964 in Camagüey, Cuba, and is considered one of the most relevant visual artists in the country in the contemporary field. In 1980 he began his painting studies at the National School of Art (ENA) in Havana, and in 1984 he obtained the title of painter. Later, between 1984 and 1989, he studied engraving at the Higher Institute of Art (ISA), where he received the National Engraving Prize in 1987 with the work Kate EcuRed. In 1989 he graduated in Fine Arts with a specialization in engraving and founded the EcuRed Camagüey Engraving Workshop. Bejarano has developed a work that combines painting and engraving, exploring the relationship between hedonism and representation, and the manipulation of surfaces as an essential condition of his work. His style is characterized by the precision of the drawing, the complexity of the composition and the exploration of texture and material. He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, including the XI Havana Biennial, fairs such as Arteamérica in Miami and the Toronto International Art Fair, as well as biennials and collateral in countries such as Mexico, Spain, Japan and the United States. He has received awards such as the Grand Prize of the National Engraving Salon (1997), the IX Biennial Prize for Latin American and Caribbean Engraving (1995) and the Distinction for National Culture and the Diploma of Artistic Merit from the ISA.
