1926 - 1990 Art Style: Abstract Art, Cuban Modernism
René Ávila was a Cuban painter and graphic artist born in Havana in 1926. He became associated with the influential postwar Cuban abstract movement and was connected to the Los Once group, one of the key collectives that helped introduce non-figurative modern art in Cuba during the 1950s. His work focused on abstraction, geometric structure, and modern visual experimentation influenced by international avant-garde movements. In addition to painting, Ávila worked extensively in graphic design and animation for ICAIC, Cuba’s national film institute. His artistic career combined fine art with cinematic visual design, helping shape modern Cuban visual culture during the mid-20th century.
